  • Soak Kulthi dal for some time and put it in a cooker. Wait for 3-4 whistles.
  • You can mash some kulthi in the cooker for a thicker texture, blend it or leave it as it is, as per your soup texture choice.
  • Blend curry leaves, coriander, and garlic, and you can also add some green/red chilies if you like your soup spicy. Now add this mixture to the boiled Kulthi.
  • Squeeze some lemon juice on top, and your delicious hot soup is now ready to slurppp!

Kulthi can also be used to get rid of pain externally. Grind the dal and make a fine powder of it. Now, make a thick paste by adding water or buttermilk to it and mix well. Depending on the pain or inflammation intensity, you can apply this paste to the affected areas once or twice a day.

  1. The first step is to soak the Kulthi dal in 1 cup of water overnight.
  2. Next morning, add the soaked kulthi dal and 3 cups of water to a pressure cooker. Add salt and turmeric powder according to your taste. 
  3. Close the cooker with a lid and cook it for 6 to 7 whistles on medium flame. Let it cool down until the pressure is released. 
  4. Next, heat olive oil or ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan on medium flame. Once the ghee has melted, add chopped onions to it and let it cook until it’s pink. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them crackle. 
  5. Add ginger-garlic paste, saute it and let it cook on a medium flame for about a minute or two.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, salt, and coriander powder. Cover the pan and let it cook in the steam for 2 to 3 minutes. 
  7. Add the mashed kulthi dal into the pan. Cover and let it simmer for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  8. Turn off the flame and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve it with cooked rice or Rotis.

Can you consume Kulthi Dal Daily?

Yes, you can cook it well and eat it as dal, soup, mix it with rice and make dosa batter too, or soak it overnight and drink the strained water for numerous health benefits.

But make sure not to overdo it because it contains a carbohydrate that can cause gas and make some people feel bloated.
